Man a Soul; or The Inward, and The Experimental, Evidences of Christianity by Artemas Bowers Muzzey is a spiritual, philosophical, and religious examination of the very nature of man. Based on a series of conversations Muzzey had with a man near the end of his life, in which „God was pleased to bless to him the words of my lips,“ this book intends to impart the wisdom of Muzzey’s teachings to those interested in spiritual discussions anchored in the Christian faith.
Man a Soul sees the author tackling some of the headiest and most challenging subjects approached by any spiritual or philosophical thinker. The first chapter deals with the nature of man, the meaning and purpose of the body, and the soul and spirit of all people. In later chapters, Muzzey discusses religious skeptics, arguing that, „Before one can have a full faith in the reality of the spiritual life, he must at least have commenced leading that life.“
The book leans heavily on The Bible for many of its teachings. As such, this text is best read by those with at least a passing familiarity of the teachings of the Christian holy book. While certainly one does not need to be a Christian to read Man a Soul, many of the author’s teachings echo those of The Bible.
Regardless of one’s personal belief system, the topics tackled in this book will likely be of interest to anybody intrigued by spiritual thinking. The author writes in an accessible style, inviting the reader to join along on a spiritual journey. However, this book is probably most intended for a Christian audience, and it is followers of the Christian faith that will likely find the greatest value in Muzzey’s work.
